Little boxes, made of ticky tacky

It really says something about the sort of devotion/fanaticism Apple inspires, that even the packaging of the new range of iPods is subject to intense scrutiny. Personally, what I find interesting about it is the fact that the box appears too small to contain a cd for the installation of iTunes. A tacit acknowledgement that widespread broadband availability is now to be taken for granted?

How times change.

Hmm. Interesting, I hadn't noticed that. Is it possible that the iPod itself comes configured as a USB mass storage device, with the iTunes/QuickTime installers stored directly on it?

Apparently not (though it's an excellent suggestion). Reviews of the nano I've just been reading say that Apple are explicitly recommending installation of iTunes prior to purchase since the software isn't included.

Given that Jobs mentioned the reduced size of the nano packaging during his presentation, I wonder if this is part of an attempt by Apple to reaffirm their environmental credentials in the face of some recent negative publicity. Well, that and a cost saving measure of course, not that the two need be mutually exclusive.
